Welcome to the homepage of my build diary. This is a sort of blog about the trials and tribulations of building a Westfield XI sports car. I am hoping that the information on this site might help someone with their build but, if not, at least it may give some amusement at my expense.

I assume that, if you are on this site and don't know me personally, you already know what a Westfield XI is. For those of you who don't, the Westfield XI is a replica of Colin Chapman's 1950s racing car the Lotus 11. The 11 was a very special thing indeed. Engineered by Colin Chapman, arguably one of the greatest automotive engineers of the time, with bodywork designed by Frank Costin, a leading aerodynamicist previously of the De Havilland aeroplane manufacturer; its performance matched its sporting looks. The car took successes in multiple classes and, at a weight of 450kg, was an excellent example of Chapman's obsession with 'low mass high performance' engineering.

So here I am, a clear fan of the original incarnation and a bit of a car snob who hates the thought of replicas. So why am I building this car? I have been considering building a kit car for a long time (over 10 years in fact) and was considering building a Caterham. I haven't done this for two (probably three) reasons. Firstly, I just don't want to go that fast any more. I'm actually only 29 (if you were wondering) but I've been driving a 2 litre hot hatch for 10 years and I feel that the amusement of going fast is far less than the amusement of pushing a car to its limits of grip (I will revisit this subject later when we look at my list of vehicle attributes) and modern cars are so good at what they do, it is very hard to explore this at non-sociopathic speeds.

Secondly, I think the Caterham is perhaps too well made. I have worked at the Caterham factory and they go together very well! In fact, there's not a lot to them from a build perspective. I realise that the XI is hardly a marvel of complexity (I develop hybrid vehicles for a living, I know what complex is!) but it's actually only partially finished. In addition, the build manual is pretty sparse in detail and this can't be said for the Caterham build manuals. With this in mind, I intend to do a lot of little tweaks that should improve the standard of build by quite a margin (this is by no means a complaint about Westfield's build quality) and really make the car my own. If you need to know, the third reason is money. This car is an absolute bargain!!!! (and the Caterham is not).
